The Scene

Driving south along California's famed Pacific Coast Highway one February, it was impossible not to notice a yellow bloom of flowers as it cascaded gently down a Malibu hillside and towards the ocean.

As the sea of flowers seemed to flow directly into the ocean-blue of the Pacific itself, rather than a simple, still capture I wanted to see if I could further blend the two together.

Using a longer shutter and panning left to right, using the camera lens almost like a paint brush, but taking in color and light, this was the result: a beautiful blur of blue and yellow, with just a touch of green and white mixed in, for good measure. It's the beauty of California's southern coastline, with sea and land blended into one.

Life goes by quick. It can feel like a blur at times. And if only to make matters worse, we are often in a hurry. I’m sure many on this particular day, with places to go and people to see and work to get done, drove past the splendor of this hillside palette without even noticing. But, I like to think that at least a few stopped. Or, if in too much of a hurry, that they at least took time to look out the window. If they did, I imagine they probably saw something like this as they sped by: a beautiful blur.
