The Scene

Captured right at sunset in Astoria, during the winter months, I stumbled across this flock of sanderlings scurrying along the surf. In a near single-file line as they ran, they stood out as shadowy silhouettes against the orange tide-covered sands.

Sanderlings are visitors to Oregon and PNW shores, migrating thousands of miles each year from their breeding grounds closer to the North Pole. They are known for being "surf dodgers" and running up to and near the water's edge, while staying just outside of it. They also leave bands of holes along the surf line, as they probe for food with their long beaks along the way.

Getting this capture took some effort, as every time I would get into position the birds would run farther up the shoreline. So I had to run ahead of them a bit, when they took a brief pause, so that when they were back on the run again I was in the right spot to get the shot.
