The Scene

Fishing villages in Vietnam are fascinating to me. There is so much work going on, always, to bring in the day's catch. Here, a young man catches this basket boat just in time before it heads any further out to sea – and he'd have had to make a swim for it.

It's a good photo in color. But it really works in black and white. With black and white, you have no colors to draw your attention (or, at times, to distract). It's purely the composition, the scene, the expressions, the actions, and silhouettes. The boat itself, the crew members, the young man's expression, friends waiting for a friend, the cigarette toss in midair, and the surfer in the background sitting on his board with no intention of working — for me, all work together to make the scene.
