The Scene

Appearing almost like a layered cake, Red Dao families in Lao Cai work together along terrace heights to plant green rice shoots for a later fall harvest.

Unlike cultivating rice at lower elevations, where deltas and plains can yield multiple harvests each year, in the mountains the climate often allows for just one.

The work also is much more labor intensive by comparison, with machines often being less practical in the terraces and most of the work still needing to be done by hand.

But therein also lies the beauty, with rice being cultivated and farmed almost exactly as it would have been centuries before, into the present day.
