The Scene

Vietnam's Mnong ethnic group has a long history with elephants in central Vietnam, as mahouts and caretakers. On this particular morning, a father and daughter give Kham Sen, a 41-year old elephant, breakfast and a bath at the same time. Kham Sen's tusks were cut and shortened within the past few years as a way to protect mahouts but also to reduce the risk of poaching. Vietnam's elephant population has been in decline for decades, making it very important to protect these incredible creatures.
