Duc, Thai Ethnic Group - Northern Vietnam

The Scene

This is Duc (Pronounced "Zook"). I met this kind soul during northern Vietnam travels in the fall of 2020. She was 66 when we met. She has one daughter. She also belongs to the Thai ethnic group in Vietnam.

Aside from her warm smile, you may notice something else: black teeth! Among certain minority groups, including the Lu, it is common for women to blacken their teeth by chewing on betel or by other means. It is considered a sign of beauty, although less so for a younger generation.
