The Scene

Built in the 18th century, the Tan Ky heritage house is both a residence and business. Representing a mixture of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese architecture, it has weathered many a flood and stood the test of time.

Surprisingly, it is the backside of the house which gains most of the attention – the magnificent ancient yellow wall you see here. The wall is its own photogenic masterpiece, with small holes, windows and vents all in unexpected places. It's the perfect background for anyone looking for a photo opp in the city, making this an incredibly busy place much of the day.

But there are quiet times, still, usually in the early morning, when Hoi An maintains its old world charm especially well. And when you can catch just a single passerby like this. Here, a local food vendor, with their own traveling restaurant and stool in tow, heads off in search of early morning customers. It's a perfect snapshot of the old world character and charm that continues to attract so many to the old city.

NOTE: This magnificent wall was just recently repainted by its owners. It will never be quite the same, or at least not anytime soon, as the aging, lime-washed walls have been replaced with a fresh coat of yellow. It makes this mid-2023 capture an important one for me, before the repainting, and that much more valuable.
