The Scene

In the ancient town of Hoi An, a woman walks her bike across the famous Japanese bridge.

Getting a clean shot like this is never easy, given Hoi An's typically crowded streets. As well, I would not typically think to do a black and white image in such a colorful city. But here I think it works.

Both the woman's conical leaf hat (non la) and bicycle are iconic to Vietnam, and in particular to the slower-paced city. Black and white also fits the timeless nature of Hoi An.

NOTE: This photo was taken prior to the bridge’s extensive renovation work in 2023 and 2024. The bridge has reopened again to the public but it is not exactly the same, adding greater value to pre-renovation captures like this. This photo was taken in 2020.
