Desolate: Tumbleweeds and an Old Wooden Fence II - Bluff, Utah

The Scene

In the area all around Monument Valley, on both the Arizona and Utah sides of the border, you'll find a lot of "nothing" that fills all the gaps between the red rock monoliths for which the valley is famous. But those open and sparsely inhabited areas, I found on my first visit, have their own calm and peaceful appeal too in a sort of barren beauty.

This particular scene came about as I was on my way to explore a nearby monument – of which there are many – and happened to notice the rugged angles and lines of the old fence just off the highway.

No longer a pen for livestock, it seems to catch and keep tumbleweeds now much better than cattle. But in its rustic and falling apart, weathered-old structure, it maintains an aesthetic appeal against the bone-dry land all around it.
